The European Commission has approved, under EU state aid rules, a €192 million Polish measure for the construction of the Gaming and Technology Hub in Katowice (Silesia).

The construction of the Hub is planned to be completed within 32 months. The aid will take the form of a direct grant. The project, co-financed by the Just Transition Fund, combines the rehabilitation of a former coal mine with the construction of a multifunctional technological facility to form an infrastructure dedicated to the gaming industry.

The Commission assessed the measure under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which enables member states to support the development of certain economic activities under certain conditions. The Commission found that the Polish aid is necessary and appropriate for the construction of the hub which will generate important socio-economic benefits for the development of the gaming and creative industries and the Katowice just transition area. Furthermore, the Commission found that the aid will be proportionate, i.e. limited to the minimum necessary, and will have limited impact on competition and trade between Member States. On this basis, the Commission approved the measure under EU State aid rules.

The non-confidential version of the decision will be made available under the case number SA.114301 in the state aid register on the Commission's competition website once any confidentiality issues have been resolved.
